Bring on the coloring books!

I trust that your month of September went smoothly without a problem. My month was a whirlwind of activities from organizing our school-wide summer reading program to teaching a two-day library orientation for every freshmen to meeting with my school principal about hosting the Battle of the Books competition for region 1 next spring. There is never a dull moment in the library.

Can you believe the fall conference is only a week away? If you have not registered, please go to www.oasl.info, click conferences, and click Fall 2007 Conference to register online. I am looking forward to some great extended sessions and concurrent sessions as well. A special thanks to Janet Setness and her conference committee for their countless hours.

A new event at the fall conference is the conference service project. Stephen Cox, library media teacher at South Salem High School and conference equipment chair, brought this idea to the committee. Thanks to Kathy Jensen, conference hospitality chair, for organizing this project. OASL is partnering with the Clatsop County Women's Resource Center, http://www.clatsopcountywomensresourcecenter.com/, by providing coloring books and crayons. The staff gives crayons and coloring books to the children while investigating domestic violence situations with their mothers. Also, Lum's Auto Center, http://www.lumsautocenter.com/, is matching $1.00 for every coloring book and crayon set. This is OASL's opportunity to give back to the community where our conference is hosted. I challenge each of us to bring one, two, three, or more sets for the Women's Resource Center!

I hope to see you and your coloring books in Seaside next week!

1. Fall Conference: "Making Waves: Sneaker, Surfing and Tsunami Ideas" - Janet Setness

Registration for the conference in Seaside is now online at http://www.oasl.info or available through the Interchange magazine. New this year is the ability to not only register online, but also pay with a credit card when you do so. The conference committee thinks we've put together a great conference, snagging Susan Patron, the latest Newbery Award winner; David Loertscher, library guru extraordinaire; Bart King, of Big Book of Boy Stuff fame; as well as some of our best and brightest local Oregon library folk presenting on a wide array of topics. Seaside is the place. Oct. 12-13 is the time. Hurry and register now!

2. Welcome new reader - Kate Vance

Owen Crawford Vance was born (just one week after the board retreat) on August 7, weighing in at 8 pounds and 13 ounces and 20 inches long. We are all enjoying having the new little guy around and watching him grow.

3. The Interchange wants to here from YOU! - Garnette Wilker

It's your chance to share your ideas about "The Power of a Picture" (or just to share information with OASL members). The Winter issue of Interchange is heading to the Guest Editor and then on to layout. If you have articles and other items for the Winter issue, please contact Merrie Olson. Articles discussed with Merrie will need to be submitted by October 17, 2007 to Merrie Olson at molson@sps.lane.edu. Announcements and ads need to be submitted to the Assistant Coordinating Editor, Kelly Bryant at kelly_bryant@soesd.k12.or.us by October 24, 2007.
Questions? Please contact Merrie Olson, Kelly Bryant, or Garnetta Wilker - wilkerg@ortrail.k12.or.us.

4. Banned Book Updates - Linda Ague

I am hoping to hear lots of good stuff about your Banned Book Week Celebrations but if you are looking for what has been challenged in Oregon, go here:

1. 2007 Legislative Education Highlights - Regina McCloud

The Oregon Legislature concluded the 2007 Session on June 29th. This Legislative Summary describes major legislation relevant to Pre-K through 12 education that was passed into law and is meant to be used as a resource for school districts, teachers, students, parents, elected officials, Department of Education (ODE) staff, and members of the public as a quick reference.
Read the 2007 Legislative Summary .

2. Libraries coming back - Anne Billeter

On Sept. 19th, the Talent City Council unanimously passed Ordinance 835 to raise funds for extra library hours via a utility surcharge of $1.25 to $1.50 a month, effective in 30 days for the duration of the county's proposed LSSI library management contract. Under the county's LSSI proposal, the Talent Library would open for 16 hours per week. The surcharge will permit the library to open 40 hours per week. The ordinance is contingent upon the County Commissioners approving a contract with LSSI. Bob Wilson, retired Ashland Librarian, is a Talent City Councilor.

3. State Library at the National Book Festival - Robin Speer

Katie Anderson from the Oregon Center for the Book at the State Library and Oregon author Susan Fletcher hosted a booth in the Pavilion of States at the National Book Festival in Washington D.C on September 29th. This year the Oregon booth featured the 2006 Oregon Book Awards finalists and winners, and books by Susan Fletcher. Susan's latest book, Alphabet of Dreams, was selected as Oregon's title on the United States map and reading list distributed to young readers and their families attending the festival. The National Book Festival, organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress and hosted by First Lady Laura Bush was held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

4. Want to be on the LSTA Advisory Board? - Robin Speer

Ever wanted to be involved with an interesting, cohesive group working with funding Oregon's libraries' visions? If so, consider suggesting yourself or someone else for a nomination to the LSTA Advisory Council. The Council meets twice a year for a day in May and September to discuss competitive grant requests totaling roughly $1 million. They also discuss ongoing statewide programs such as OSLIS, L-Net, and more. They make recommendations on funding to the Oregon State Library Board of Trustees. The term is three years, starting in January 2008. The Oregon State Library is currently looking for suggestions of people for the following Council positions:
** 3 representatives of library users
** 1 school library representative
** 1 representative of disadvantaged persons
Please email any suggestions to Ann Reed. Please include the person's name, email or phone number, city they live or work in, and a sentence or two on why they would be a good LSTA Advisory Council member.
